Infinity Edges and the Pool Nobody Is Standing Next To
Shoulder-season pools run unattended for weeks, and vanishing-edge designs concentrate their own debris. Where a fully solar, cordless surface skimmer fits.

The Shoulder Season Belongs to the Equipment
There is a stretch between the end of swim season and the day a pool is closed — sometimes six weeks, sometimes, in a warm climate, the entire winter — where the pool is fully operational and completely unattended.
Nobody swims. Nobody walks past. And in a second home, a vacation property, or a house whose owners have simply moved indoors for the year, nobody is there at all.
The water does not know this. Debris keeps arriving on the usual schedule, and the consequences of leaving it accumulate at the usual rate. The shoulder season is the period where a pool's condition is determined entirely by whatever runs without being asked.
The Infinity-Edge Complication
Vanishing-edge pools make this harder, and they are the design most likely to be found on the kind of property that sits empty for stretches.
The hydraulics that produce the effect — a continuous sheet of water flowing over a weir into a catch basin — also mean floating debris is drawn steadily toward that edge. It rides the sheet, goes over, and lands in the catch basin, which is smaller, less accessible, and much less pleasant to clean than the pool itself. A week of unattended leaf drop on an infinity pool concentrates its entire debris load in the least convenient container on the property.
There is also an equipment question. A machine designed to bounce off solid walls behaves unpredictably at an edge with no wall.
The Betta Flex is specified for infinity-edge pools alongside conventional in-ground and above-ground designs, which makes it unusual among surface skimmers, most of which are rated for the latter two only.

Cordless and Solar, With No Second Option
Betta Flex is completely solar-powered and 100 percent cordless. There is no adapter and no charging routine — the panel on top is the entire power system.
For a property being visited occasionally, this is the correct trade. A machine that needs to be plugged in periodically needs someone there to plug it in, which reintroduces exactly the dependency the shoulder season removes. A machine that harvests its own energy will still be working in week five.
It also means the pool equipment pad is irrelevant to it. No outlet, no conduit, no installation, no electrician. The unit goes in the water and works.
Eco Mode Is a Shoulder-Season Mode
Flex runs two cleaning modes: Normal, for continuous 24/7 performance, and Eco, which runs smart periodic sweeps.
The seasonal logic is straightforward. Normal mode matches the summer, when the pool is in daily use and debris is arriving from the deck, the swimmers and the air at once. Eco mode matches a pool that is not being used — a lighter, intermittent cadence that manages the debris that still arrives while working comfortably within a shorter solar day.
Autumn is the season where a device that can throttle its own duty cycle is worth more than one that cannot.
Built Low, for the Edges Where Debris Ends Up
Flex uses a streamlined, low-profile body designed to navigate tighter spaces, clean more efficiently around pool edges, and get into narrow corners.
This matters more in an unattended pool than a busy one. In a pool in daily use, someone with a net handles the corner where leaves collect. In an unattended pool, the corners are the whole problem — debris migrates to edges and steps and stays there, and a machine that cannot follow it there leaves the visible portion of the job undone.

What Six Unattended Weeks Actually Cost

The consequences of an untended shoulder season are cumulative rather than dramatic, which is precisely why they get discounted.
Organic debris decomposing in the water consumes sanitizer continuously, so a pool that was chemically balanced in September is not balanced in November, and nobody was there to notice the drift. Waterlogged leaves resting on the floor stain the surface in place. Fine organic matter loads the filter, which then runs at reduced efficiency for however long the pool keeps circulating.
None of this is visible in week one. By week six it is the difference between a routine closing and a remediation.
The specific value of an autonomous surface skimmer here is not that it does more work than a person. It is that it does a small amount of work on every one of those forty-two days, including the ones nobody was there for.
The Second Home, the Rental, and the House That Went Quiet
Three situations produce the same equipment requirement from very different starting points.
A second property is visited on a schedule that has nothing to do with the pool's needs. A short-term rental has guests who use the pool and a cleaning turnaround that is not equipped to manage water. And an ordinary family home in October is, functionally, an unattended pool with people living in front of it — everyone is indoors, and the back door stops opening.
In all three, the constraint is the same: whatever happens to that water has to happen without a decision. A device that needs to be scheduled, plugged in, or checked will eventually be none of those things. A device that harvests its own energy and runs on a fixed mode keeps working through the exact weeks when attention is unavailable.
The Rest of the Build
Flex has a newly engineered soft-touch casing, gentle on pool surfaces — a real consideration for a machine that will be working against liners and finished edges for weeks with nobody watching. It runs twin salt- and chlorine-tolerant SCT motors, so saltwater systems are in scope. It carries a shallow water safeguard, and it covers pools up to roughly 40 by 60 feet, about 2,400 square feet.
It has no app control. On a device whose purpose is to run unsupervised on a fixed pair of modes, that reads less as an omission than as a decision — one fewer thing to configure, one fewer account, one fewer connection to lose while the house is empty.
Where the Limits Are
Betta Flex is a surface skimmer. It works on top of the water, capturing debris before it sinks, and it does not vacuum the floor or clean walls. On an unattended pool this is worth understanding precisely: continuous surface capture dramatically reduces what reaches the bottom over a long absence, but it does not eliminate the eventual floor pass.
The realistic expectation for a shoulder-season pool with a working surface skimmer is a clear surface, a manageable basket, and a floor that needs one session rather than a recovery project.
The Point
The pool that gets neglected is not the one that is used badly. It is the one that is not used at all, in a season nobody thinks of as pool season, on a property where the debris arrives whether or not anyone does.
For that pool, and particularly for a vanishing-edge design that concentrates its own debris in the hardest place to reach, an autonomous, self-powered surface skimmer is the difference between a pool that is waiting and a pool that is a project.
